Keegan McInroe has been a sonic force in Funkytown for the last decade or so, and the past couple of years he has been spreading the gospel of Fort Worth music to the good people of Europe. In a 34-day period, McInroe flew to a gig in Amsterdam, then played in Norway, Sweden, Germany and a dozen other countries. He flew back to St. Louis to play a wedding, and then back to Norway, Sweden and Germany. His album, A Thousand Dreams, has been getting airplay over there. “If you plant a seed,” McInroe said, “you gotta go water it.” But Sunday night at Fred’s Texas Cafe, he was sharing the stage with Fort Worth’s own goddess of accordion: the lovely and talented Ginny Mac. McInroe the world traveler, Ginny Mac and Fred Burgers. What’s not to love? I pulled up a chair to the side of the stage and ordered a Big Fred — a 3/4-pound version of the famous Fred Burger. McInroe and Mac were playing a soulful version of Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain. I’m used to seeing Mac in a lead role, but she was accompanying McInroe on accordion and providing an angelic backing vocal to contrast with his gargled-with-red-devil-lye growl. The result was country/folk/blues with a hint of zydeco. We got a few originals, and numerous covers, including Georgia on My Mind, Wild Horses and such deeper tracks as Bob Dylan’s Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You and the Grateful Dead’s Black Peter. McInroe fell in love with Europe when he studied in London back in 2004. But of all the places he played, the city that made the biggest impression was Mostar, Bosnia. “The war was 20 years ago,” McInroe said, “and the city still wears it on their sleeve. A lot of the city is still in ruins. I was walking through … an arched walkway area and it was pocked with bullet marks on both sides, and you just think, ‘How heavy did the s--- get?’ “The people there are so interested,” he continues, “in not only in what’s happening on the outside, but bringing people into their city and basically sharing what is happening there now. Because everybody knows what happened 20 years ago, but there’s not a lot of people coming around now.” McInroe and Mac gave a few more covers after a break, with Are the Good Times Really Over and Ramblin’ Fever (Merle Haggard), Life By the Drop (Stevie Ray Vaughan), Sugaree (Grateful Dead), People Are Strange (the Doors), and, finally, Carmelita (Warren Zevon) — all of which McInroe insisted were actually written by Ginny Mac (despite most of them http://www.keeganmcinroe.com https://www.facebook.com/keeganmcinroemusic
